Section 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Highly flammable. Reacts violently with water liberating extremely flammable gases.Water-reactive.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
May cause eye irritation. May result in corneal injury.
Skin:
Contact with skin causes irritation and possible burns, especially if the skin is wet or moist. Exposure may cause irritation and possible burns.
Ingestion:
Causes gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause muscle tremor and impaired motor function. May cause tremors and convulsions. May cause muscle paralysis, respiratory failure, and possible death.
Inhalation:
Causes respiratory tract irritation. Inhalation of fumes may cause metal fume fever, which is characterized by flu-like symptoms with metallic taste, fever, chills, cough, weakness, chest pain, muscle pain and increased white blood cell count.
Chronic:
Chronic ingestion may cause electrolyte imbalance.
Section 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES
Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid immediately.
Skin:
Get medical aid. Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.
Ingestion:
Call a poison control center. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid.
Inhalation:
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Notes to Physician:
Section 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Flammable solid.
Extinguishing Media:
DO NOT USE WATER! Use dry chemical.
Section 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal container. Very fine particles can cause a fire or explosion.
Eliminate all ignition sources. Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Scoop up with a nonsparking tool, then place into a suitable container for disposal.
Section 7 - HANDLING and STORAGE
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Wash hands before eating. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Use only in a well-ventilated area. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing.
Do not ingest or inhale.
Storage:
Store in a cool, dry place. Do not store in direct sunlight. Store in a tightly closed container. Store totally immersed in liquid paraffin.
Section 8 - EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTION
Engineering Controls:
Use process enclosure, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to control airborne levels below recommended exposure limits.
Exposure Limits CAS# 7440-39-3: United States OSHA: 0.5 mg/m3 TWA Belgium - TWA: 0.5 mg/m3 VLE Malaysia: 0.5 mg/m3 TWA Netherlands: 0.5 mg/m3 MAC Spain: 0.5 mg/m3 VLA-ED Personal Protective Equipment Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHAs eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166.
Skin:
Wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent skin exposure.
Clothing:
Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure.
Respirators:
Follow the OSHA respirator regulations found in 29 CFR 1910.134 or European Standard EN 149. Use a NIOSH/MSHA or European Standard EN 149 approved respirator if exposure limits are exceeded or if irritation or other symptoms are experienced.
