Section 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Harmful by inhalation and if swallowed.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes eye irritation.
Skin:
Causes skin irritation. Chronic inhalation may cause lung damage, bronchitis, and silicosis. May decrease blood clotting.
Ingestion:
May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Ingestion of large amounts of fluoride may cause salivation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, labored breathing. Exposure to fluoride compounds can result in systemic toxic effects on the heart, liver, and kidneys. It may also deplete calcium levels in the body leading to hypocalcemia and death. May cause bone structure abnormalities.
Inhalation:
Causes respiratory tract irritation. May cause heart disturbances, possibly leading to cardiac arrest and death. May cause hyperactive reflexes and muscular spasms. May cause respiratory arrest.
Chronic:
Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause permanent bone structure abnormalities. May cause kidney injury. Chronic inhalation may cause lung damage, bronchitis, and silicosis. May decrease blood clotting.
Chronic exposure to fluoride compounds may cause systemic toxicity.
Section 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES
Eyes: Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Skin:
Get medical aid immediately. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.
Wash clothing before reuse. Destroy contaminated shoes.
Ingestion:
Call a poison control center. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid.
Inhalation:
Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid. Do NOT use mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If breathing has ceased apply artificial respiration using oxygen and a suitable mechanical device such as a bag and a mask.
Notes to Physician:
Administration of calcium disodium EDTA may be useful in acute poisoning with its use at the discretion of qualified medical personnel.
Section 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Use extinguishing media appropriate to the surrounding fire. Substance is noncombustible.
