Section 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Harmful by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed. Very toxic by inhalation. Irritating to eyes. Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin.Lachrymator (substance which increases the flow of tears).Highly toxic.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Lachrymator (substance which increases the flow of tears). Contact may cause irritation, tearing, and burning pain.
Skin:
Harmful if absorbed through the skin.
Ingestion:
Poison by ingestion.
Inhalation:
May cause burning sensation, coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Inhalation of dust causes severe irritation of the nose and throat. Vapors are extremely irritating to the respiratory tract.
Chronic:
Chronic exposure may cause liver damage.
Section 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES
Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Do NOT allow victim to rub eyes or keep eyes closed.
Skin:
Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.
Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
Inhalation:
Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Do not use mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device.
Notes to Physician:
Antidote: None reported.
Section 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. Water runoff can cause environmental damage. Dike and collect water used to fight fire. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion.
Extinguishing Media:
Use water fog, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or regular foam.
Section 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Sweep up, then place into a suitable container for disposal.
Section 7 - HANDLING and STORAGE
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling.
Storage:
No special storage requirements.
Section 8 - EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTION
Engineering Controls:
Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below the permissible exposure limits.
Exposure Limits CAS# 558-13-4: Belgium - TWA: 0.1 ppm VLE; 1.4 mg/m3 VLE Belgium - STEL: 0.3 ppm VLE; 4.2 mg/m3 VLE France - VME: 0.1 ppm VME; 1.4 mg/m3 VME Germany: 1.4 mg/m3 TWA Malaysia: 0.1 ppm TWA; 1.4 mg/m3 TWA Netherlands: 0.1 ppm MAC; 1.4 mg/m3 MAC Personal Protective Equipment Eyes: Wear safety glasses and chemical goggles if splashing is possible.
Skin:
Wear appropriate protective gloves and clothing to prevent skin exposure.
Clothing:
Wear appropriate protective clothing to minimize contact with skin.
Respirators:
Wear a NIOSH/MSHA or European Standard EN 149 approved full-facepiece airline respirator in the positive pressure mode with emergency escape provisions.
