Section 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Highly flammable. Very toxic by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed. Causes burns.Flammable liquid.Air sensitive.Corrosive.Moisture sensitive.Lachrymator (substance which increases the flow of tears).
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes eye burns. Lachrymator (substance which increases the flow of tears). May cause chemical conjunctivitis and corneal damage.
Skin:
Causes skin burns. Toxic in contact with skin. If absorbed, may cause symptoms similar to those for ingestion. May be metabolized to cyanide which in turn acts by inhibiting cytochrome oxidase impairing cellular respiration. May cause skin rash (in milder cases), and cold and clammy skin with cyanosis or pale color.
Ingestion:
May be fatal if swallowed. May cause severe and permanent damage to the digestive tract. Causes gastrointestinal tract burns. May cause perforation of the digestive tract. May cause central nervous system effects. Metabolism may release cyanide, which may result in headache, dizziness, weakness, collapse, unconsciousness and possible death. Ingestion may result in symptoms similar to cyanide poisoning which is characterized by asphyxiation. May cause systemic effects. Large doses of cyanide may result in suddden loss of consciousness and prompt death; small doses will prolong the above symptoms 1 to 2 hours.
Inhalation:
Inhalation of high concentrations may cause central nervous system effects characterized by nausea, headache, dizziness, unconsciousness and coma. May cause liver and kidney damage. Causes chemical burns to the respiratory tract. May cause effects similar to those described for ingestion. Inhalation may be fatal as a result of spasm, inflammation, edema of the larynx and bronchi, chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema. Aspiration may lead to pulmonary edema. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Inhalation may produce tearing, sneezing, rhinorrhea (the free discharge of a thin nasal mucus), cough, dyspnea (labored breathing), bronchial asthma, and cyanosis (bluish discoloration of skin due to deficient oxygenation of the blood). Exposure may cause coughing, breathing difficulty, and possible pulmonary edema. May cause systemic effects. High concentrations may cause pulmonary edema and lung hemmorrages. May be metabolized to cyanide which in turns act by inhibiting cytochrome oxidase impairing cellular respiration. Inhalation may result in symptoms similar to cyanide poisoning which include tachypnea, hyperpnea (abnormally rapid or deep breathing), and dyspnea (labored breathing) followed rapidly by respiratory depression. Pulmonary edema may occur.
Chronic:
Chronic inhalation and ingestion may cause effects similar to those of acute inhalation and ingestion. May be metabolized to cyanide which in turn acts by inhibiting cytochrome oxidase impairing cellular respiration. Animal studies have reported that fetal effects/abnormalities may occur when maternal toxicity is seen.
Effects may be delayed.

Section 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES
Eyes: Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid immediately. Do NOT allow victim to rub eyes or keep eyes closed.
Extensive irrigation with water is required (at least 30 minutes).
Skin:
Get medical aid immediately. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.

Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately. SPEED IS ESSENTIAL.
A DOCTOR MUST BE NOTIFIED AT ONCE. Treat patient as for inhalation.
Inhalation:
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Do NOT use mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If breathing has ceased apply artificial respiration using oxygen and a suitable mechanical device such as a bag and a mask. SPEED IS ESSENTIAL, OBTAIN MEDICAL AID IMMEDIATELY.
Notes to Physician:
Exposure should be treated as a cyanide poisoning. Effects may be delayed.
Antidote: Always have a cyanide antidote kit on hand when working with cyanide compounds. Get medical advice to use.

Section 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
General Information:
Containers can build up pressure if exposed to heat and/or fire. As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. Vapors may form an explosive mixture with air.
During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Water Reactive. Material will react with water and may release a flammable and/or toxic gas.
Flammable liquid and vapor. Reaction with water may generate much heat which will increase the concentration of fumes in the air.
Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. Containers may explode when heated. Containers may explode when heated or if contaminated with water.
Extinguishing Media:
DO NOT USE WATER! Do NOT get water inside containers. For large fires, use water spray, fog or alcohol-resistant foam. For small fires, use carbon dioxide, dry chemical, dry sand, or alcohol-resistant foam.

Section 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Avoid runoff into storm sewers and ditches which lead to waterways.
Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Remove all sources of ignition. Absorb spill using an absorbent, non-combustible material such as earth, sand, or vermiculite. Do not use combustible materials such as sawdust.
Provide ventilation. Do not get water inside containers. A vapor suppressing foam may be used to reduce vapors. Use water spray to reduce vapors or divert vapor cloud drift.

Section 7 - HANDLING and STORAGE
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Use only in a well-ventilated area. Ground and bond containers when transferring material. Do not breathe dust, vapor, mist, or gas. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing.
Empty containers retain product residue, (liquid and/or vapor), and can be dangerous. Keep container tightly closed. Keep away from heat, sparks and flame. Do not ingest or inhale. Do not allow contact with water. Discard contaminated shoes. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind, or expose empty containers to heat, sparks or open flames. Keep from contact with moist air and steam.
Storage:
Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame. Keep away from sources of ignition. Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a tightly closed container. Keep from contact with oxidizing materials. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Keep away from acids. Keep containers tightly closed.
