Section 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Causes severe burns. Toxic in contact with skin and if swallowed.Corrosive.Toxic.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
May cause irreversible eye injury. Vapor or mist may cause irritation and severe burns. Contact with liquid is corrosive to the eyes and causes severe burns.
Skin:
Causes severe skin irritation. May be fatal if absorbed through the skin. Harmful if absorbed through the skin. Prolonged and/or repeated contact may cause irritation and/or dermatitis. May cause deep, penetrating ulcers of the skin. Substance is rapidly absorbed through the skin. May cause skin discoloration.
Ingestion:
May cause liver and kidney damage. May cause central nervous system depression, characterized by excitement, followed by headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea. Advanced stages may cause collapse, unconsciousness, coma and possible death due to respiratory failure. Causes digestive tract burns with immediate pain, swelling of the throat, convulsions, and possible coma.
Inhalation:
May cause irritation of the respiratory tract with burning pain in the nose and throat, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and pulmonary edema. May also cause pallor, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, darkened urine, headache, sweating, convulsions, cyanosis (bluish skin due to deficient oxygenation of the blood), unconsciousness, fatigue, pulmonary edema & coma.
Chronic:
Chronic inhalation and ingestion may cause effects similar to those of acute inhalation and ingestion. May cause liver and kidney damage.

Section 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES
Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid immediately.
Skin:
Get medical aid immediately. Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. SPEEDY ACTION IS CRITICAL! Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation:
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.

Section 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. Vapors may form an explosive mixture with air. Use water spray to keep fire-exposed containers cool. Use water with caution and in flooding amounts. Contact with moisture or water may generate sufficient heat to ignite nearby combustible materials.

Keep away from heat and flame. Keep away from sources of ignition.
Store in a tightly closed container. Keep from contact with oxidizing materials. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances.

Incompatibilities with Other Materials:
Sodium hydroxide generates large amounts of heat when in contact with water and may steam and splatter. Sodium hydroxide reacts with mineral acids to form corresponding salts. Reacts with weak acid gases like hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide.
Sodium hydroxide ignites when in contact with cinnamaldehyde or zinc, and reacts explosively with a mixture of chloroform and methane.Sodium hydroxide is corrosive to metals such as aluminum, tin, and zinc as well as to alloys such as steel and may cause formation of flammable hydrogen gas. Phenol is incompatible with strong oxidizers, alkalies, calcium hypochlorite halogens, and nitric acid. Mixtures with nitrobenzene and aluminum chloride may violently explode when they come in contact with phenol. Phenol coagulates colodion and proteins. Hot liquid phenol will attack aluminum, magnesium, lead and zinc metals.
