Section 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Risk of explosion by shock, friction, fire or other sources of ignition. Toxic by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed.
Forms very sensitive explosive metallic compounds. May cause sensitization by skin contact.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes eye irritation. May result in corneal injury.
Skin:
Causes skin irritation. May cause skin sensitization, an allergic reaction, which becomes evident upon re-exposure to this material.
Ingestion:
Harmful if swallowed. May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause corrosion and permanent tissue destruction of the esophagus and digestive tract. May cause headache.
Inhalation:
May cause respiratory tract irritation. Material has a low vapor pressure, so exposure to vapor is not likely.
Chronic:
Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis. May cause kidney injury. Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause yellow staining of the skin and conjunctiva and "yellow vision".

Section 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES
Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid immediately.
Skin:
Get medical aid immediately. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.
Wash clothing before reuse.
Ingestion:
If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation:
Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid.

Section 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
General Information:
Evacuate area and fight fire from a safe distance. As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear.
Exposure to heat may promote violent decomposition. This material is an explosion hazard when exposed to heat, mechanical shock, or friction. This material poses an explosion hazard when dry. Approach fire from upwind to avoid hazardous vapors and toxic decomposition products.
Extinguishing Media:
Do NOT use carbon dioxide. Do NOT use halogenated agents. Use flooding quantities of water as spray. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out.

Section 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Remove all sources of ignition. If the material is dry, explosives experts may be necessary to dispose of the spill. Isolate area and deny entry. Provide ventilation. Evacuate unnecessary personnel.

Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Use with adequate ventilation.
Minimize dust generation and accumulation. Material is heat, shock and/or friction sensitive. Use care in handling and storage. Loosen closure cautiously before opening. Avoid breathing dust, vapor, mist, or gas. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep away from heat, sparks and flame. Container should be opened by a technically qualified person. Avoid mechanical shock and friction.
Dried crystals may be present within threads of screw top containers and present a detonation hazard when opening. If a bottle of picric acid is old and has a metal cap, care must be exercised as highly shock sensitive metal picrates may have formed.
Storage:
Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame. Keep away from sources of ignition. Store in a tightly closed container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Keep away from metals. Material can explode if dry. Do not store on concrete.
Separate from organic materials.

Section 8 - EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTION
Engineering Controls:
Use process enclosure, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to control airborne levels below recommended exposure limits. Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower.
Personal Protective Equipment Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHAs eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166.
Skin:
Wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent skin exposure.
